Adam’s suspected something going on with you for a while now.
From the late night calls from an unknown number, to the changed passcode on your phone, none of this is the norm.
You used to wilt underneath his embrace beneath the duvet.
But now any affection he receives comes in the morning in the shape of a quick peck and an awkward distant smile.
Almost as if your mind travels to other places he can’t follow.
And he’s tried.
God knows he’s tried.
From reading books on relationships falling apart to asking even King for advice-something he’d never willingly do- you’ve kept the chains locked on the door to your heart and he can’t find a way in.
So you left him with no choice.
One night under the guise of a wig and change of clothes with his face cast towards the ground, he stalks you from your apartment after you turned him down for a meet up.
He follows you up the street, around the corner, to a shoddy apartment complex no better off than your own.
He witnesses as you throw yourself into the arms of another man waiting outside.
You press a kiss to his lips.
Then his jaw.
Then his neck and you both fumble to get back inside as the man’s hands yank you against him, his hands roaming up and down your sensual body.
Adam stands there for a moment before heading back to your apartment.
When he gets there, he picks up after your clothes strewn across the floor, probably because you were deciding what to wear for your meet up with this guy and didn’t settle on something until the last minute.
He collects an assortment of things meant to entice and seduce a lover off your wrinkled bed sheets, the tags still attached.
Newly purchased items he’s never had the honor of seeing you wear before.
A tear trickles down Adam’s cheeks as he fists the flimsy material.
Did you even think of him when you kissed that man? Soft and hungry? Ready to serve yourself on a platter?
Or did you make excuses in your mind as to why you’re doing the things you’re doing-wanting to have your cake and eat it too?
Did you ever even love him?
Will you still even if your body craves someone else?
Adam curls in on himself, bending and breaking under the weight of his swirling thoughts and his cruel imagination.
He loves you.
He loves you.
So much.
So why? Why are you sleeping in someone else’s bed and not staying in his, where you belong?
Adam tastes salt on his lips as more tears spill.
And he stays like that until he hears the sound of your front door opening hours later, turning on the lights in your bedroom to find him sitting there.
You: Adam?
It’s the note of concern in your voice. The first time you’ve acknowledged his presence in what feels like a very long time.
His back stiffens as your hands brush against his back.
You: Adam, what’s wrong?
There’s a note of panic in your voice. And it’s not out of worry, he detects, no.
It’s because you’re afraid Adam’s finally pieced together what you’ve been hiding.
So he looks up.
Smiles.
And acts like nothing is wrong.
He doesn’t show a hint of what he’s discovered until the next morning when he lays a box on your bedside table while you’re still asleep with a ribbon wrapped around the exterior.
When you open it…
You’ll find the severed fingers of your ex lover preserved inside.

She is diagnosed with petit mal seizures and psychophysical insomnia which makes working normal jobs impossible for them.
